"Faith is to believe what you do not see;
the reward of faith is to see what you believe."
- St. Augustine
The crowd cheer was louder than I expected. I jumped up and down, nervous. The day has arrived. NBL Dance Battle Semi-Finals. (Author's note: lol i made this up). I flexed my neck, and did a couple of stretches. Mallory Dean was beside me, on the ground, doing a split. I could tell from her face that she was nervous too.
Who wouldn't be?
"Alright, people. Come closer to me." Amy ordered, waving us forward.
We all huddled in a circle, arms around each other.
"This is the biggest competition we've done so far. So I want you to do your very best. Forget about anything else, just feel it. I believe in us, and I know you do too. Remember, guys! Winner gets to go through the championships in London!" she squealed, boosting up our confidence.
"YEAH!" we shrieked in response.
"Kat, make me proud with your solo." she said, pointing to me.
"Have I ever let you down, Amy?" A smirk played on my lips.
"That's the spirit!" she replied, impressed. "Alright, get ready at the front there. Jake, get ready your position. You're going first."
Jake walked to the front, toward the battle ground. I followed him, as I'm going in second. I tried to look at him. God, he was never nervous.
"You have the be really good, Kat. The House of Gwai are mighty." Jake warned.
"What? The House of Gwai? Like in Step Up 3?" I asked.
"That's exactly who they are. We're gonna battle them today."
"How'd you know that? I thought we weren't suppose to know our opponents before start of the battle?"
He scooted closer to me. "You see that guy with the pirate eye-patch?" He jerked his chin toward them.
I looked, and there they were. They were all dressed in blue, exactly like how they dressed in the movie! All of them are Asians. Damn, we're screwed.
I took a nervous gulp. "Yeah?"
"He's the mighty one. He really has some power moves." he told me.
"Oh, wow. Any disadvantages?"
"They suck at foot work, as you can see in the movie. We have a really good advantage here in our crew, since Little Mikey joined. They don't have little kids for the battle."
I glanced over my shoulder, where Little Mikey was behind me. He was only 7, but has a hell of talent. As Jake said, he was our secret weapon. The battle's starting in two minutes. Cold sweat washed over me.
"Give it up people, for The House of Gwai!" the host practically yelled through the michrophone in his professional voice.
How did two minutes past so quickly?
The crowd broke into an applause and cheered. Of course they have
fans, they were in a freaking movie once! When the host introduced them, The House of Gwai roared like a lion, showing how fierce and... well,
mighty they are. Honestly, they looked scary.
"And today, they're gonna be battling... Last year's King of Arizona (again, i made that up) champion, Renegade Crew (oh my man the name is so cheesy)!"
The crowd cheered and clapped, but not as loud as the opponent. I took an unnecessary deep breath, and walked further up front. I could see them much clearer now, and they gave me a nasty look. I glared at them. They may be good, but nothing can bring the Renegades down. I walked around, trying to calm myself.
"The House of Gwai are gonna start first. You guys know the rules, so lets turn up the music!" the host shrieked again, and the crowd cheered.
The music was blasting our ears, as the first member of The House of Gwai started the battle. It's a girl. She may be around 18-19, perhaps a year older than me. I could tell she was a B-Girl from the way she danced. However, this girl is just messing around on the floor. No power moves. Hah.
After that, it was Jake's turn. I prayed for Jake not to mess up, although he never did. I was cheering inside when he
finally did his signature air flares. The crowd cheered at him. After finishing, he walked back to us, with a smile I'd never seen him wore before.
"You were great!" I praised him.
He flashed me a huge grin. "Thanks. Oh no. Its his turn."
"Who?" I asked. I looked at the battle ground, it was the guy with the eye-patch!
"Oh hell no." I said to myself, seeing how good he is. Freaking good.
"Kat, you better get ready. Take deep breaths. Your turn is coming," Jake told me.
"Right. My turn." I took a few more deep breaths.
The guy ended his dance, so now his mine. I did a front flip and a somersault to the centre of the battle ground. The crowd cheered again, and I was proud of myself. Nervousness was way down the list now, as I danced. I put on a big smile whenever the crowd cheered at me. When it was time for all of us to dance in a group, my crew members all ran up to me as we did the routine. The House of Gwai are smoked now!
When my solo came, the other members disappeared behind me. The song also changed, and I was dancing alone. Everything felt right. I didn't think of anything else. Just the dance. I ended my dance with a bow, and I was happy that I jumped up and down. For a minute, I thought all my problems were gone.
But it was just for awhile.
