Chapter 4 : Championships

"Faith is to believe what you do not see;
the reward of faith is to see what you believe."
                                                          - St. Augustine

The crowd cheer was louder than I expected. I jumped up and down, nervous. The day has arrived. NBL Dance Battle Semi-Finals. (Author's note: lol i made this up). I flexed my neck, and did a couple of stretches. Mallory Dean was beside me, on the ground, doing a split. I could tell from her face that she was nervous too.

                          Who wouldn't be?

"Alright, people. Come closer to me." Amy ordered, waving us forward.

We all huddled in a circle, arms around each other.

"This is the biggest competition we've done so far. So I want you to do your very best. Forget about anything else, just feel it. I believe in us, and I know you do too. Remember, guys! Winner gets to go through the championships in London!" she squealed, boosting up our confidence.

                           "YEAH!" we shrieked in response.

"Kat, make me proud with your solo." she said, pointing to me.

"Have I ever let you down, Amy?" A smirk played on my lips.

"That's the spirit!" she replied, impressed. "Alright, get ready at the front there. Jake, get ready your position. You're going first."

Jake walked to the front, toward the battle ground. I followed him, as I'm going in second. I tried to look at him. God, he was never nervous.

"You have the be really good, Kat. The House of Gwai are mighty." Jake warned.

"What? The House of Gwai? Like in Step Up 3?" I asked.

"That's exactly who they are. We're gonna battle them today."

"How'd you know that? I thought we weren't suppose to know our opponents before start of the battle?"

He scooted closer to me. "You see that guy with the pirate eye-patch?" He jerked his chin toward them.

I looked, and there they were. They were all dressed in blue, exactly like how they dressed in the movie! All of them are Asians. Damn, we're screwed.

I took a nervous gulp. "Yeah?"

"He's the mighty one. He really has some power moves." he told me.

                            "Oh, wow. Any disadvantages?"

"They suck at foot work, as you can see in the movie. We have a really good advantage here in our crew, since Little Mikey joined. They don't have little kids for the battle."

I glanced over my shoulder, where Little Mikey was behind me. He was only 7, but has a hell of talent. As Jake said, he was our secret weapon. The battle's starting in two minutes. Cold sweat washed over me.

"Give it up people, for The House of Gwai!" the host practically yelled through the michrophone in his professional voice.

How did two minutes past so quickly?

The crowd broke into an applause and cheered. Of course they have fans, they were in a freaking movie once! When the host introduced them, The House of Gwai roared like a lion, showing how fierce and... well, mighty they are. Honestly, they looked scary.

"And today, they're gonna be battling... Last year's King of Arizona (again, i made that up) champion, Renegade Crew (oh my man the name is so cheesy)!"

The crowd cheered and clapped, but not as loud as the opponent. I took an unnecessary deep breath, and walked further up front. I could see them much clearer now, and they gave me a nasty look. I glared at them. They may be good, but nothing can bring the Renegades down. I walked around, trying to calm myself.

"The House of Gwai are gonna start first. You guys know the rules, so lets turn up the music!" the host shrieked again, and the crowd cheered.

The music was blasting our ears, as the first member of The House of Gwai started the battle. It's a girl. She may be around 18-19, perhaps a year older than me. I could tell she was a B-Girl from the way she danced. However, this girl is just messing around on the floor. No power moves. Hah.

After that, it was Jake's turn. I prayed for Jake not to mess up, although he never did. I was cheering inside when he finally did his signature air flares. The crowd cheered at him. After finishing, he walked back to us, with a smile I'd never seen him wore before.

"You were great!" I praised him.

He flashed me a huge grin. "Thanks. Oh no. Its his turn."

"Who?" I asked. I looked at the battle ground, it was the guy with the eye-patch!

"Oh hell no." I said to myself, seeing how good he is. Freaking good.

"Kat, you better get ready. Take deep breaths. Your turn is coming," Jake told me.

"Right. My turn." I took a few more deep breaths.

The guy ended his dance, so now his mine. I did a front flip and a somersault to the centre of the battle ground. The crowd cheered again, and I was proud of myself. Nervousness was way down the list now, as I danced. I put on a big smile whenever the crowd cheered at me. When it was time for all of us to dance in a group, my crew members all ran up to me as we did the routine. The House of Gwai are smoked now!

When my solo came, the other members disappeared behind me. The song also changed, and I was dancing alone. Everything felt right. I didn't think of anything else. Just the dance. I ended my dance with a bow, and I was happy that I jumped up and down. For a minute, I thought all my problems were gone.

But it was just for awhile.
Chapter 3 : A friend
19:02

"There are three things that grow more precious with age ;
old wood to burn, old books to read, and old friends to enjoy."
                                                                                      - Henry Ford

                              Lunch dragged.
I began stuffing pieces of burger into my napkin, as Kiara devoured her salad. Of course, she had to maintain her weight and couldn't eat junk food I consumed daily. It's so Kiara. We haven't spoken a word since we got to the restaurant. I know she will quickly pop the question in three seconds.
                              One..... Two....... Three.
"So, are you going to tell me what happened?" she asked, looking up at me.
                              Bada bing.
"Well, you don't seem interested." I pointed out.
"Are you kidding me?" she replied, rolling her eyes.
I took a deep breath. I knew that sooner or later, either I would tell her one day, or she would find out. Why not just relate the story to her now?
"Okay, alright, alright. I.... I went to Ashleigh's party yesterday." I said in a small voice.
Kiara's eyes widened. "What the f-? Kat! I told you not to go there. That animal is a whore. Do you know what she did to me? She set my hair on fire! Well, almost, but that was her intention! And one more thing, we got into a fight like, serious physical fight and acted like I started it. I got to the principal's office and Mrs. Potter said I may not be head cheerleader anymore. But, of course, Coach Lewis wouldn't do that. One time, she -"
I cut her off with, "Kiara, Kiara! Relax. I know the story. So you hate her."
"Then why did you go to the party, for Christ' sake?" she asked in disbelief.
"Well.... I didn't intend to go to the party. At that night, I asked Julian out. He said he was 'busy'," I said, bending my fingers, imitating two rabbit ears. "I was curious, so I went up to his place. His mum was there. She told me Julian went to Ash's party. Can you believe it, Kiara? He lied to me!"
"Then what happened?" she asked, nodding for me to continue as she listened intently to my every word.
"So I went to the party. It was crazy. Like, literally half of them were drinking. I asked around for Julian, and they said he was hanging out with some friends upstairs. I got upstairs... I heard like, heavy breathing and banging. I got closer, and I realised it was really Julian. The sound came from a door that has Ashleigh's name printed on it. I opened the door.... and....." I sniffed. "They were naked and he was ontop of her."
A salty tear ran down my cheek as I wiped it away. We were quiet for a second. I looked up at her, peeking at her expression. Was it sympathy.... Or anger?
"Oh, honey." she whispered, taking my hand.
"Go on, just say it. Lay it on the table. Yell at me, say it's my fault. Because I really do deserved it." I sobbed.
She squeezed me hand. "Don't ever say that, Kat. I would do never do that to you. Never. It wasn't your fault. It's his! All this while you trusted him, you loved him, you cared about him.... And at the same time, he was fucking Ashleigh behind your back? That's stupid. He is stupid."
"Remember when we were eight," she started to say, "and my dog died?"
I let my mind flood with memories. Of course I remember. Kiara loved her cocker spaniel like hell. She named it Pepper.
                               "Yeah." I replied.
"Who was there for me?" she asked. "Who stayed by my side when I'm crying? Who hugged me and didn't let go? Who made me feel better? Who cared for me?"
I looked up at her. Her eyes bored into mine.
"It was you, Kat." she whispered. "I couldn't ask for a better friend. When you're troubled, I'll be there for you. Because we're best friends, and I love you so much."
My lips pulled into a faint smile. "Thank you, Kiara."
I leaned across the table to give her a hug. More tears fell. Tears of joy.
"You know what ticks me off?" she asked, pulling away.
                                "What?"
"How the most beautiful girls hurt themselves for no reason"

Chapter 2 : Forget
Thursday, 15 December 2011, 19:55

"Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like
unrequited love." - Charlie Brown, Peanuts.

Cry. Feel pain. Hurt inside, I thought. I thought of all the times Julian told me he loved me and how it all means nothing now. I thought of him with another girl, laughing and having fun. He finally left me to drown in my emotions. I wondered, Am I doing the right thing? Should I forgive him? Will I be able to see him with another girl, especially the one causing all this pain? What should I do?
My thoughts was interrupted by a buzzing sound. Or was it?
"Katrina!" someone roared at me. It wasn't a buzzing sound, it was my stern dance teacher, Amy.
I looked at her with a confused expression. Obviously I wasn't paying attention during the dance practice.
                "Are you listening?" she demanded.
                "What? I'm sorry, Amy, I -"
She cuts me off with, "Kat, the competition is in two weeks! You have to get your head in the game, this is important! Or do you want to get kicked out of the group?"
I pretended to be afraid, 'cause I know there was no way she's going to kick me out because I'm one of the best dancers here.
"No, no!" I gave her a fake apologetic expression. "I'm sorry, I promise I'll pay attention."
She gave me a baleful glare. "From the top!" she shrieked.
I fought back an eye roll as I grumpily walked to my position. The others did the same too. The dance routine started from the ground, so I crouched. Amy's assistant, pushed the button "Play" from the giant boombox. "No Diggity" started to play, and all of us started dancing to the music. I did well, but I didn't feel great. This wasn't usual, because I have so much passion for dancing and I'd usually put on my best smile when I danced. I dance to express myself, whether it's happy, sad or angry. However, this time round it isn't working.
Now, it was my solo. The rest disappeared behind me, and I was dancing alone. The dance studio was dimly lit, and I couldn't see myself in the mirror in front of me that clearly. But, I don't need a mirror to see myself. I know I wasn't looking great today. Finally, I ended the dance with a bow. The rest clapped, and I flashed a weak smile.
I dragged my legs to the corner, where I had left my bag and other stuff. I fished out my bottle, and drank water from it. At the corner of my eye, I saw my fellow dance mate, also my very best girlfriend, Kiara.
Kiara is Brazilian, and she had a tan figure. She also had long, silky blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes. She is a cheerleader captain in school. She has a high reputation in school too, and that caused boys to fall over heels for her, and girls wanting so much to be like her. However, she isn't like those bitchy and snobby cheerleader captain like how people see in the movies. She is nice, funny and ain't cocky at all.
"Are you okay, Kat?" she asked sweetly. "What happened? You're like a zombie."
She must've been commenting on the dark circles under my eyes. I'd stayed up all night crying.
                "Yeah, I'm okay." I lied.
                "I don't think so."
"I am, really. Don't worry about me."
                "Wanna tell me what happened?"
My eyes bored into hers. Why am I keeping secrets from her? She's my best friend. Oh right. Because then she'll give me the I-told-you-so face.
I sighed. "Alright. But, lets go somewhere else."
We picked our bags from the floor and walked towards the door. Before we could do so, Amy stopped me.
"We have to talk." she said.
"I can't. I have to go." What I really want to say is, I'm not in the mood to talk to you.
"It will only take awhile. Kiara, leave us for a minute."she said, directly looking at Kiara.
"Okay, I'll meet you outside, Kat." Then, she left.
Great. Now it's just me and Amy.
"Are you okay, Kat? You used to be so good and involved in the class. What happened?" Amy asked.
                "I'm fine." I insisted.
"Really? Then why are you always daydreaming and messing up the steps?"
                "It's just some.........family problems."
She looked at me as though as she didn't believe me.
"You know I can talk to your sister about it."
"No, it's fine. It's personal. You don't have to worry about it." I reassured her.
"The competitions in two weeks and -"
I interrupted her. "I get it. I promise I'll practice harder."
She sighed. "Alright then. How's your leg? Are you able to make it in two weeks?"
I glance down at my knee. A bandage was wrapped around it due to the accident last night. It didn't hurt so much now, though.
"Probably. I'm a quick healer." I told her.
                "Okay then. Take care, Kat."
                "Bye." I waved.
I wrenched the studio door open and made it outside to where Kiara's waiting. When she saw me, her head perked up and walked over to me.
"What's that all about?" she asked.
"Amy's just asking about my leg. Let's go, I'm starving." I said as I pulled her.
As we walked, I made a mini-practice in my head on how to relate the story to her.
It's difficult to do that with an empty stomach.

Chapter 1 : It's over
Wednesday, 14 December 2011, 06:55

I stormed out of the room angrily, then slammed that door behind me. I could hear the footsteps behind me - he was chasing me. I closed my eyes to fight back the tears. He was calling my name with his hoarse and deep voice. Must've been from the bottles of alcohol he drank earlier.
But that wasn't the main problem.
"Kat! Kat!" He shrieked my name. "Kat, wait up!"
I ran as fast as I could. I didn't exactly have a place in mind to go to, but it didn't matter. I have to get away from him as fast as possible. I dashed toward the busy road, risking my life, as drivers honked their cars in annoyance at me. I finally made it to the pavement, and I quickened my steps to a deserted park, assuming that he couldn't find me. But like always, I was wrong.
Just then, I tripped over a rock and fell. I landed knee-first and I groaned in pain. I looked down at my knee and tore away my jeans to reveal the spot where the pain had bewildered me. I found out that I was bleeding really badly. Blood tickled down my legs.
             "Argh, fuck!" I cussed loudly.
"Kat, Kat!" the same rough voice called for me from behind.
My head whipped behind me, and I panicked when I saw him running after me. I struggled to get up, as the pain throbbed. My body tried to reject the pain, and I was sucked again and again into a blackness that cut out whole seconds or minutes of the agony, making it that much harder to keep with reality.
               I tried to separate them.
Non-reality was black, and it didn't hurt so much.
So, with all my perseverance, I got up and began running again. Due to my badly injured knee, my speed was slower. I was sure he was going to catch up with me, but I didn't stop running. I kept running, as it made me feel like I'm going to escape from this madness. I had a fucked up life.
Just as I thought, he caught up with me and grabbed hold of my elbow. I tried to break free from his uncomfortable touch, but he was stronger. Of course, he had his muscles all worked up. And who was the idiot who encouraged him to lift those weights? Me.
"Kat, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean it at all. I was drunk and I didn't know what I was doing!" He persisted. "You know I love only you. I'll never go to any other girls."
I gave him a baleful glare. "Love, Julian? Love?" I said in disbelief. "What do you know about love? All this while I've given you what you wanted. I was there for you when you're having problems. I'd love you more than anything. I didn't ask for money or clothes or makeup in return. I only want us to be happy. But now what?"
He had a guilty look in his face, as he looked down on me.
"Baby, I love you. It was just a mistake I'll never do again." he tried again. "I'm sorry! Ashleigh was just a friend, Katrina. Nothing more."
I threw my hands in the air in exasperation. "Right. Friend. Do you even realise that I had walked in when you two were having sex? Wow, Julian. That's some pretty serious friendship." I said sarcastically.
                "I was drunk, Kat!"
"Didn't I already tell you not to drink anymore? But you're stubborn. You won't listen to me. And now look where we are."
There was a long silence. He wasn't going to answer, so I did.
I picked up my bag from the floor. "I'm getting out of here. Before I leave, I want you to know that you're just a stupid, moronic and pathetic jerk. I was wrong when I loved you with all my heart. Our relationship is over."
I hastily walked out of the park, leaving him alone.

How is it? Too short? :D
